September 18, 2025 – Following the U.S. Senate’s confirmation of John Squires as Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on September 18, 2025, United for Patent Reform (UFPR) issues the following statement:
“We congratulate John Squires on his confirmation as USPTO Director. UFPR agrees with Director Squires’ commitment to Congress that access to the PTAB should be ensured for American companies seeking review of invalid patents, and we appreciate his recognition that the PTAB must have the necessary personnel and tools to fulfill its statutory mission. To bring this about, UFPR asks that Director Squires reverse the policy changes made before his arrival at the USPTO, as outlined in our recent letter. Businesses small and large, and across all sectors, rely on the PTAB to take a second look at invalid patents in a procedure that is faster and cheaper than litigation.
“Director Squires apparently understands the impact that abusive patent litigation can have on American businesses, and the role that Congress intended for the PTAB to reduce this burden while improving patent quality overall. UFPR’s members have experienced these benefits first-hand. The PTAB is a competitive advantage of our patent system, and UFPR stands ready to work with Director Squires to help restore the PTAB to what Congress intended, and to support American economic and competitive leadership in the process.”
